1. When is the deadline for application?

The last day of enrollment is Friday of week two of any session. If you are applying for a student visa, you should apply as early as possible. Remember, mail can be slow between your country and the USA. Also, you will need plenty of time to make an appointment at the US embassy or consulate to get a student visa. Because now all visa applicants must appear in person to make visa interviews, it may be more difficult to get an immediate interview. You should definitely apply more than a month before the placement test date if you want to have enough time.

b. I want to do a change of status to an F-1 (student) visa

Nonimmigrants, other than those in a B-1, B-2, or F-2 status, may attend classes while their change of status is still pending. University Language Institute (ULI) will mail your change of status documents to the United States Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS). You should apply before your current status expire. You should submit the following documents for your change of status:

  • Form I-539 "Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status", completed and signed.

  • Copy of all passport pages

  • Copy of the front and back of your I-94 card

  • Original form I-20. ULI will make a form I-20 for you after receiving all other documents required for your change of status.

  • SEVIS fee payment receipt (more information here)

  • Copies of any other immigration documents that reflect your legal status (for you and your dependents)

  • Family member documentation (if applicable) for any dependents that will be changing their status to F-2. Your dependents should be included on the last page of Form I-539. You should also include copies of passport pages, I-94 cards, I-20s, and all other immigration documents for your dependents.

  • Financial support documents (see below for acceptable documents - choose one):

    • A current personal bank statement or letter from your bank stating the amount of money you have in your account

c. If I have another type of visa

Please send all application materials to ULI, including a copy of all immigration documents so that we can give you guidance about what to do to attend ULI. Also, our insurance company does not cover people with residency or citizenship, so you should purchase insurance on your own.

B-1 or B-2 (tourist or business) visa: You can attend classes with a tourist or business visa only if it is incidental to your original purpose for visiting the USA and if you do not pursue a full course of study. This means that you should only study for one session (7 weeks) for less than 18 hours per week (1-3 hours per day) or take all 5 classes for less than 7 weeks.

F-2 or J-2 visa: You can attend classes for less than 18 hours per week (1-3 classes per day)
